i watched obama debate a lot in primaries when i was with edwards and clinton and john ed wards. this is the guy who showed up. he's a good debeirut. but he doesn't enjoy. it you look at this. romney looked like -- i am here, this is great, i am having fun. he really did. and obama looked sort of sour and like it was another headache to have to be there. that won't help. the question here, rom flow's supporters needed to be reinvigorated. he definitely got that out of tonight. what did happen with the undecided? did women move? you know, is that enthusiasm going to spread out and show up in the differential in terms of who will vote? >> was there body language you noticed? >> to the extent, i thought they both behaved with considerable dignity and respect. so i don't think anybody lost on body language. but the president was continually looking down and he was sometimes having an expression on his face that may have seemed like a smirk. that never helps you. they really never do. on balance, i thought that governor romney's body language was good. the expression on his face, an e

if you looked at the debate. president obama looked down a lot. and looking at his notes. what about the body language. >> i thought body language. styliically romm rom was the winner. no one disputes that. but the substance issues, when you look at the fact that mitt romney got out there and said, he's not going to voucher -- he will voucherize medicare and cut taxes. what i find interesting is that mitt romney has been all over the place in what he. >> no, he hasn't. >> you can't trust him. just yesterday he said something else. when it comes down to it. they are issues that are challenging. >> for obama to go back to the bill clinton days. bill clinton worked with republicanns, president obama has not. >> he tried to work with republicans. >> one more question i want to ask you both. >> sure. >> what about the undecided vores? that is what they aimed for. who won the undecided vote. >> mitt romney did. independents are result oriented and mitt romney said this is how it worked in the past and going to be done. >> i think independents are undecided if they had the second

if kerry is filling in for romney against this debate, you know, against obama in debate prep, is he preparing him for more than just substance? is he also preparing him for these stylistic what-ifs? these moments where obama could be pulled in one direction or the other and trying to sort of hedge against that? >> well, i think the biggest disadvantage obama has right now is practice. mitt romney's had a lot of debates. he went through a long primary practice where he got beat up a lot and got to beat up other people. barack obama had no primary process and has not been in a debate since his debates in the last election. so i think he's got -- he's not in fighting shape is my guess and all these practices he's doing, are to get him in the fighting shape. hopefully they have enough time to do it and hopefully he has a sparring opponent in john kerry who is not pulling any punches, not being as respectful to him as his staff might be and showing him that mitt romney is going to get on the stage knowing this is probably his last chance and he's going to be very aggressive in taking on

we've soon barack obama debate better than he did tonight. has the presidency changed himself so much that he can't go back to being a good debater? this is what he's like now? >> that's the $64 question. if what we saw tonight is what we see in the next two debates, president obama is going to be in serious trouble. how is this going to play in ohio? he has to make the case to the middle class that he's headed in the right direction with the economy. >> not one time did he say i want the american people to know we've added private-sector jobs for the last 30 months and we're headed in the right direction. how hard is that to say? is that hard? >> ezra klein is coming up to check some of the money numbers that we did hear tonight. we're mad about the numbers that were not articulated as we check the one that were. our live coverage of the first presidential debate. stay with us. >> this tax plan. and now, five weeks before the election, he's saying that his big bold idea is, never mind. >> we'll focus on getting the cost of health care down.

she stumbled on the truth when she said that obama is not a good debater. it is not that obama was off his game, that is his game. if he does not have a prompter, he is not good. you see it in his press conferences where he does not have a prompter. he has never been good at conferences. he rambles. the press has been unimpressed with what he does. he can decide how long he wants to take for an answer. this is who he is. it is going to be at a town hall the next one. he has more ability to connect with an audience than romney, so he will have an advantage in the second debate that he did not have been the first. >> would you rather be good or lucky? 7.8% unemployment rate. that is pretty good news. >> unless you actually look at the numbers. if you look at those getting new jobs, aut 114,000. the need to have 150 to stay at the same rate. what has been happening is you have people leaving the work force, retiring, or -- wait a minute, nina -- or when you become chronically unemployed, over one year, you drop off the rolls and you are not put in the denomina
